Rick Meserini, President and CEO of St. Augustine Health Ministries will present a history of this mission driven, not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to “providing a continuum of health care, housing, and community services to the chronically ill and aging in our community.”

Rick Meserini has built a successful career working in senior care facilities for the past twenty-five years. He holds a Masters degree in Health Care Administration from St. Joseph College. He is a licensed nursing home administrator. He has been the President and CEO of St. Augustine Health Ministries for ten years.

Turning the Tide of Unbelief and Unwellness
through Science-Based Apologetics
in a High School Science Curriculum

Is it reasonable to believe in our Catholic faith? Or has science provided significant evidence for us to doubt our Catholic faith? From multiple sourced and successive surveys over the last ten years, the primary reason young Catholic adults leave their Catholic faith comes from a sense that science has somehow proven their faith to be untrue or in conflict with physical reality.

Recent studies by the CDC and The American Academy of Pediatrics have declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health based on higher rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. In addition, several mental health research studies have clearly shown improved mental health if individuals within a community can maintain a worldview encompassing their belief in God with high intellectual confidence and acceptance of their truths based on reason.

The presentation will highlight a novel incorporation of evidence-based apologetics in a science curriculum in turning the tide of unbelief and unwellness in high school students at Cleveland Benedictine High School since 2020.

Biography

Dr. Martin Lindway has been working since 2020 as a pioneer in developing a science curriculum for secondary Catholic education that utilizes science-based apologetics, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning strategies to address the essential life-faith questions that have provided high school students with a framework to examine and grow in their faith and resiliency to defend their faith.
 
In support of this initiative, Dr. Lindway continues to collaborate directly with Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, President of Magis-Center. His successes have been recently recognized during recent keynote addresses at the Duc In Altum Conference (October 2023) and the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education National Conference (June 2023).
 
At Benedictine High School since 2019, he has been the department chair of science, College-level Physics and Chemistry instructor, and head golf coach.
 
Dr. Lindway has 25 plus years of corporate experience in Global R&D and Global Marketing and over 14 years of various lay ministerial roles in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and Charleston, South Carolina. Martin has been married for 36 years to his wife, Deborah, an Executive Vice President at PNC. They have three children; the youngest is a senior in college. and reside in Westlake, where they attend Saint Ladislas Parish.

Join us for the 66th annual Bishop of Cleveland’s “State of the Diocese” lunch on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Windows on the River!

Bishop Malesic was born August 14, 1960 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  He is a 1978 graduate of Central Dauphin East High School in Harrisburg.  He attended Lebanon Valley College in Annville pursuing a degree in biology  for three years prior to entering the seminary.  In 1981, Bishop Malesic was accepted into the seminary program at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy in 1983.  He continued his theological studies at Josephinum and was awarded a Master of Divinity in 1987.

Bishop Malesic was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1987 at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  In 1996, Bishop Nicholas Dattilo sent him to study canon law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he received his licentiate in canon law in 1998.  Bishop Malesic served the Diocese of Harrisburg’s Tribunal in various capacities until he was named Bishop of Greensburg, appointed by Pope Francis in 2015.  On September 14, 2020, Bishop Malesic was installed as the 12th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.

In addition to leading the Diocese of Cleveland, Bishop Malesic is also a member of two USCCB (United States Catholic Council of Bishops) committees – the Committee on Canonical Affairs and Church Governance and the Subcommittee for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

Mary von Carlowitz is the Director for the Office of Human Life for the Diocese of Cleveland.  Her responsibilities include planning, coordinating and integrating activities of the office within a consistent ethic of life.  

Mary Von Carlowitz’s education and background are impressive.  She has earned a Master’s Degree in Theology from Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology.  She holds a bachelor’s degree with dual majors in diplomacy and foreign affairs and history.  Mary is also a certified lay ecclesial minister.  She is a member of the National Association of Lay Ministers and the National Christ Child Society.  Her background includes extensive experience in parish faith formation and ministry as well as youth and young adult ministry as well as parish and school ministry.  

Last, but not least, Mary Von Carlowitz brings experience from her own family which includes eight sons, a daughter, four daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.

Standing before 1,600 current students, alumni, faculty, staff, religious, and guests on October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Franciscan University Steubenville’s first alumnus president said he did not come to start over, but to continue the good work of Franciscan University.

“I believe that God is laying a foundation for revival in our Church,” Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, ’89 said moments after being inaugurated as the University’s seventh president, “and I firmly believe that Franciscan University is being invited to be the center of that revival.”

Throughout his remarks, Father Pivonka said Franciscan University should look to Christ the Teacher.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio was born in 1951 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He attended Catholic schools in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics at Boston College, an S.T.B. in Theology and a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.

 

Archbishop Broglio was ordained to the priesthood (for the diocese of Cleveland) on 19 May 1977 in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the North American College, Rome.

 

From 1977 to 1979 he served as associate pastor, St. Margaret Mary Parish, South Euclid, and lectured in Theology at Notre Dame College, South Euclid. From 1979 to 1983 Archbishop Broglio attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

 

The Archbishop served as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (1983-1987) and of the Apostolic Nunciature in Asuncion, Paraguay (1987-1990). From 1990 to 2001 Archbishop Broglio served as Chief of Cabinet to Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Secretary of State to Saint Pope John Paul II and desk officer for Central America.

 

In February 2001 the Archbishop was named Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic and Apostolic Delegate to Puerto Rico. The Archbishop was ordained as an Archbishop by His Holiness St. John Paul II on 19 March 2001.

 

On 19 November 2007 Archbishop Broglio was named the fourth Archbishop of the Military Services USA, and installed 25 January 2008, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul.

 

Archbishop Broglio is a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and currently serves as President of the Conference (2022 – 2025). Most recently he served as Secretary of the Conference and as a member of the Administrative Committee. In the past he has served as Chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace; Chairman of the Canonical Affairs and Church Governance Committee and of the Task Force for the 2013 Special Assembly and was a member of the Committees on Canon Law and Church Governance, for Religious Freedom, and International Justice and Peace, and the Subcommittees for the Defense of Marriage and Health Care.

 

He is a Trustee and the Chancellor of Catholic Distance University, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, and is Chairman of the Communications Committee for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

 

He served as a member of the Board of Directors of CRS from 2009 to 2011, and again from 2018 to 2022.

 

The Archbishop’s honors include Commander of the National Order of Côte d’Ivoire; Commander of the Order of the Polar Star, Sweden; Grand Cross with Silver Badge of the Order of Sánchez, Duarte and Mella, Dominican Republic; Grand Officer of the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins of Chile; Commander of the Order of Antonio Jose de Irisarri of Guatemala; Grand Cross of the Order of the Libertador San Martin of Argentina; Officer of the Orden de Mayo, Argentina; Commander of the Italian Republic; Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulchre with star; Honorary Conventual Chaplain of the Order of Malta; Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael of the Wing; Grand Officer of the Order of Sts. Maurice and Lazarus; Knight Grand Cross of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George.

 

Archbishop Broglio is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and French.
